Individual adult and adolescent psychotherapy utilizing psychosomatic
approaches (Body Psychotherapy, EMDR and Somatic Experiencing).
Psychotherapy consists of a set of psychological techniques, aiming
at alleviating psychological disturbances, behavior problem and even
psychosomatic symptoms. A formal delfinition of psychotherapy adopted by
the APA (American Psychological Association) is the following:
"Psychotherapy is the informed and intentional application of
clinical methods and interpersonal stances derived from established
psychological principles for the purpose of assisting people to modify
their behaviors, cognitions, emotions, and/or other personal
characteristics in directions that the participants deem desirable"
(Norcross, 1990, p. 218-220 )
The basis for any successful psychotherapeutic intervention is the
detailed diagnosis and evaluation of the nature and severity of the
presented problems, through the use of a combination of special tests
and diagnostic interviews.
Body Psychotherapy constitutes a recognized
psychotherapeutic theory and practice, which addresses the body, the
mind and the spirituality of the person as a unified whole, attempting
to reestablish its' lost unity. For such purposes it utilizes various
techniques involving movement, breathing, emotional charge and
discharge, dialogue, internal imaging, sensations and other information
from bodily functions.
The body reflects the life history of the individual. Psychological,
spiritual and bodily health are interrelated and are actually one and
the same thing. In Body Psychotherapy, the therapist works together with
the client in order to determine the meaning of the difficulties in the
person's life and health.
Some of the problems which can be successfully dealt with Body
Psychotherapy are: Psychosomatic symptoms, phobias, anxiety & panic
attacks, depression, sleep difficulties, sexual abuse, sexual
dysfunctions, family relationships, divorce, boulimia, anorexia,
traumatic experiences and otheres.
Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR)
is an integrative psychotherapy approach that has been extensively
researched and proven effective for the treatment of trauma. EMDR is a
set of standardized protocols that incorporates elements from many
different treatment approaches. To date, EMDR therapy has helped
millions of people of all ages relieve many types of psychological
stress.
Somatic Experiencing® is a body-awareness approach
to trauma being taught throughout the world. It is the result of over
forty years of observation, research, and hands-on development by Dr.
Levine. Based upon the realization that human beings have an innate
ability to overcome the effects of trauma, Somatic Experiencing has
touched the lives of many thousands. SE® restores self-regulation, and
returns a sense of aliveness, relaxation and wholeness to traumatized
individuals who have had these precious gifts taken away. Peter has
applied his work to combat veterans, rape survivors, Holocaust
survivors, auto accident and post surgical trauma, chronic pain
sufferers, and even to infants after suffering traumatic births.
